Alchemia pearl and mother of pearl post earrings

A seashell is the protective outer layer created by a marine organism. The soft bodied inhabitants secrete calcium carbonate that accumulates as the animal grows. Shells have been used as currency, tools and musical instruments as well as for rituals and in arts and crafts. Mother of pearl is the iridescent inner layer (nacre) of some shells. If an irritant (such as sand or a parasite) gets inside of the shell, the organism defends its soft tissues by layering the nacre over this debris; this is how pearls are formed.
